Environmental Management System
At Mahindra Accelo, sustainability is at the core of our operations as we transition towards cleaner fuels and energy-efficient solutions. Under our brand identity, The Decarbonisation Revolution, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint through innovation, renewable energy adoption, and responsible resource management.
We are making steady progress in our decarbonisation journey, actively working towards our sustainability targets for 2033, as set by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Our commitment to reducing emissions has led to tangible achievements, reflecting our efforts in integrating renewable energy solutions and enhancing energy efficiency across operations. This journey is guided by the following three core pillars, which are delivering tangible results and showcasing our commitment to a sustainable future:
Minimising Energy Use and Switching to Cleaner Fuels
Generating Renewable Energy
Purchasing Renewable Energy Credits and Carbon Offsets
Key initiatives driving this progress include the installation of solar panels at our Kanhe Plant and ongoing rooftop solar projects at Vadodara and Bhopal Plants, which are expected to meet 30-40% of Plant energy requirements through renewable sources by FY 2024-25. Additionally, process optimisations, waste recycling, and the use of battery-operated forklifts have further contributed to lowering our carbon footprint.
Through these pillars, we are not only addressing our direct emissions but also ensuring a more sustainable energy future. While we have made significant strides, we remain committed to accelerating our efforts and bridging the gap between our current achievements and the SBTi targets set for 2033. With continued investment in renewable energy and sustainability-driven innovations, we are steadily advancing towards a greener future.
Optimising Energy Efficiency
At Mahindra Accelo, we are committed to energy conservation and the transition to cleaner fuels as key elements of our sustainability strategy. By actively minimising energy consumption across our operations, we aim to reduce our environmental impact while fostering a greener and more responsible future.
Our energy efficiency initiatives are aligned with our broader sustainability goals and include a range of actions designed to reduce energy use, promote renewable energy, and support circular practices. Key efforts include:
Waste Management Practices
Implementing reduce, reuse, and recycle strategies at various stages of our operations, focussing on minimising waste and maximising resource efficiency.
Battery-Operated Forklifts
Using energy-efficient, battery-operated forklifts further helps further reduce energy consumption in our facilities.
Purchasing Energy-Efficient Products
Prioritising energyefficient equipment and technologies across our operations to minimise energy use.
Use of Recyclable Materials
Prioritising recyclable materials such as steel scrap and pallets, contributing to a circular economy.
Employee Car-Pooling
Encouraging car-pooling among employees reduces overall energy consumption and lowers emissions.
Recycling End-of-Life Vehicles
Ensuring our commitment to circularity extends to recycling end-of-life vehicles, reducing waste and recovering valuable materials.
In addition to these efforts, we are investing in renewable energy with further installations being planned at other plants, reinforcing our commitment to renewable energy and contributing to our goal of a sustainable, low-carbon future. Through these energy efficiency measures, we are driving meaningful progress towards achieving our decarbonisation targets and promoting a more responsible, circular approach to business.
Circular Economy and Recycling Initiatives
In alignment with global decarbonisation and circular economy principles, Mahindra Accelo has commenced a vehicle recycling initiative known as CERO. This Government authorised initiative, launched in partnership with MSTC, focusses on cleaner roads and reducing dependence on imported scrap steel.
Operating across 46 locations (7 RVSFs/Recycling centres + 39 collection centres) in India, CERO ensures ethical recycling of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). Our contemporary, automated recycling facilities comply with all environmental regulations set by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards. These facilities depollute, disassemble, and recycle ELVs while preventing hazardous waste leakage into the ecosystem.
CERO’s impact extends beyond compliance; it actively conserves resources. With steel comprising 70% of a vehicle’s composition, our recycling process redirects this material to melting furnaces, fostering self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on imports. To date, CERO has recycled over 30,000 ELVs, cutting approximately 29,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and reintegrating over 21,000 tonnes of recycled steel into the economy.
These initiatives highlight Mahindra Accelo’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By integrating sustainability into core operations, we are driving responsible business practices while contributing to India’s sustainable future.
Sustainable Water Management
Water conservation is a top priority for us, and we have put in place comprehensive water management strategies to ensure efficient use and responsible stewardship. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and best practices, we are focussed on reducing water consumption and increasing recycling and reuse.
Our approach includes several key initiatives:
Repurposing Wastewater
Utilising Bio Sewage Treatment Plants (Bio STPs) and drip irrigation techniques to treat and repurpose wastewater, reducing our reliance on freshwater.
Water System Management
Addressing water system leaks and conducting regular audits and monitoring to prevent unnecessary wastage and fine-tune consumption at each facility.
Rainwater Harvesting
Our Nashik Plant is equipped with rainwater harvesting capabilities, helping us move closer to achieving a net water-positive status. In FY 2024-25, we enhanced this system to conserve and recharge approximately 14,400 cubic metres of water annually.
Through these efforts, we continue to make significant strides towards sustainable water management and reducing our overall environmental impact.
Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Practices
Effective waste management is integral to our environmental stewardship. We recognise that responsible effluent and waste management is essential in minimising our environmental impact and optimising resource use. Our comprehensive system ensures rigorous monitoring of waste and effluent streams, adhering to best practices for treatment and disposal.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, we have successfully achieved Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) certification across all our Plants. This accomplishment highlights the dedication and hard work of our Plant teams, who have adopted innovative waste management practices to reduce landfill waste.
As part of our waste management strategy, we continually explore alternative disposal methods and seek opportunities to reuse materials, transforming waste into valuable resources. This proactive approach enhances operational efficiency and supports our conservation goals.
Cero Recycling
Advancing our commitment to the circular economy, Mahindra Accelo has partnered with Mahindra MSTC Recycling Private Limited (CERO), India's first government-authorised vehicle recycler. Through CERO, we are reducing pollution, cutting the nation's reliance on imported scrap steel, and conserving precious resources.
