As India gained independence, along with the birth of a new nation, the industrial giant we know today as Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) was also born, diversifying from steel trading to manufacturing and allied activities.
Steel trading continued to be a core activity for the M&M group, post-independence, and was handled by its Accelo Division. Post liberalisation, Accelo division also begun offering value-added services for steel processing which gave birth to MSSCL – Mahindra Steel Service Centre Ltd. – located at Kanhe (near Pune). MSSCL was the first steel service centre in the organized sector in India and focused on Just–in–Time (JIT) delivery of processed steel to its customers, a concept hitherto unknown in the country.
Around the same time, the group felt that since its steel trading and processing operations had expanded considerably, it may help to convert the steel vertical into an independent subsidiary. Mahindra Accelo was thus born in 1999.
Mahindra Accelo, the Mahindra Group’s oldest business, started operations as a steel trading business and over the years, diversified into the steel processing business across Automobile, Power and Electrical Stampings segments. Mahindra Accelo Group has constantly innovated and led the technology curve by implementing world leading technologies in India. It has moved up the value chain by entering in progressive stampings business. Recently, it has also ventured into new verticals like Automobile Recycling and Purlins (Steel Structures) and Electric Vehicle Motor Cores besides expanding across geographies.
Over the years, Mahindra Accelo has setup various subsidiary companies in joint venture with global steel mills and trading conglomerates.
